KUALA LUMPUR (Politics Now!) - In an update on what must be the latest sordid case surrounding Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration and his PKR party, the mysterious "Mr H" has fallen ill and as such, police will have to postpone questioning him over a lewd scandal involving a senior government appointee, who has since abruptly resigned.
“A new date to record his statement will be announced later,” IGP Razarudin Husain the nation’s top cop, no less, said in a statement.
Reporters had gathered at the Putrajaya police station a day ago in the hopes of catching a glimpse of Mr H, said to be a member of Anwar's PKR party and also a staff at J-Kom, a government propaganda unit under the Prime Minister's Office, where the scandal had erupted. They were disappointed by the no-show.
"There are so many problems that need to be solved, so many issues that are weighing down the country's progress and development. And then comes this sort of gutter scandal taking up public time. It's a real disgrace," an analyst told Politics Now!
"If not handled transparently, it will boomerang very badly on Anwar. One year in office and nothing to show. Ratings are down, ringgit is down, economy is down - only blunders, broken promises and scandals seem to be up."
SAME-SEX UNDERTONES EMBARRASSING FOR ANWAR
The J-Kom scandal, with same-sex undertones, had shocked the nation and triggered the abrupt resignation of its director-general Agus Yusoff. A video of a cozy, almost sexual telephone conversation between Agus and another staff Wahab Abdul Kadir was leaked online and went viral.
Agus has since admitted it was him but not his voice in the video and the conversation he purportedly had with Wahab had been "doctored". Wahab admitted he secretly taped the video call but did it "without audio".
Wahab, who is also the youth vice-chairman of a branch in Anwar's PKR party, claimed Mr H paid him to tape the call.
Agus has also lodged a police report against Mr H but declined to reveal his identity. Bloggers have alleged that Mr H is actually Hakim Ramlee, but he has denied the claims.
Nevertheless it has not stopped the speculation on the motive behind the clip. Was it just to 'sabotage' Agus and take over his job? Many Malaysians think such an explanation is too "simplistic" and only the "naive" would believe it.
If Mr H was not aware of the consequences and how such a move could blow up on party boss Anwar, then it shows he doesn't have the IQ to be J-Kom boss, they argue.
Or could it be a move to sabotage Anwar, who has two same-sex scandals of his own and over which he was sent to jail twice.
Already, political rivals are raring to grill Anwar over the 'A&W' scandal, as the J-Kom episode has been nicknamed. Fearing embarrassment or not, Anwar has so far maintained an 'elegant silence' over the case.
